A new sewing queen has been crowned! Asmaa Al-Allak, a consultant breast surgeon from Cardiff wooed the judges with her show stopping crafts in the popular national sewing contest streamed on BBC One; The Great British Sewing Bee

In an interview with the BBC, she shared her hope for making Wales proud as one of the two contests from Cymru.

The contest provides a set of challenging tasks, where 12 contestants race against the clock to take on three challenges. Each where someone is knocked out of the challenge. Asmaa’s creations led her to win “Garment of the Week” at one point in the contest too.

In her post-winning interview on the show she said; “Amongst everything I have done in the last 45 years of my life – this has to top it all – not the medical degree, not anything else, this is it”.

Creativity can be a beautiful form of escapism and an outlet for self-care.
Asmaa combines her love for medicine with art specialising in making underwear, and is known to have made post-op bras for her breast cancer patients.

To have Muslims represented in their passionate fields provides inspiring avenues for the community to see things possible for themselves.

We wish Asmaa all the success as she goes forward with her career and passion!
